It is exciting to see how data science is being leveraged and adapted by the physical sciences. As Newsletter Editor for the American Physical Society Topical Group on Data Science (GDS), I am pleased to announce the inaugural issue of the GDS newsletter (https://www.aps.org/units/gds/newsletters/upload/winter20.pdf). For this first GDS newsletter, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Nathan Sanders, a physicist who made the leap to industrial data science and is now the Chief Scientist at Warner Media Applied Analytics. The newsletter also features exciting contributed articles from GDS members that review trends and ideas at the intersection of data science and physics. My goal with the newsletters is to create a community resource that provides original content, perspectives and pointers covering physics-related data science topics, resources, and opportunities in order to support the data science community within APS. I hope that you enjoy the inaugural issue of the GDS newsletter.
